Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.

The Scott’s Oriole is yucca country. Icterus parisorum breeds in the desert mountains and arid slopes of the Southwest wherever yuccas and agaves grow tall enough to hang a nest from, and its lemon-yellow and black plumage blazes against the dry grey-green of the desert in May like something that wandered in from the tropics. Which is, essentially, accurate: the wintering grounds are in Mexico.

The colour is the first distinction. Where Baltimore and Bullock’s orioles wear orange, and the Orchard oriole wears chestnut, the Scott’s is yellow - a clean, bright lemon-yellow that reads warm in direct sun and almost greenish in shade. Against this, the black of the head, back, and throat is absolute. White wing bars and yellow shoulder patches complete the pattern. The total effect is one of the most striking oriole plumages in North America.

The nest is a woven cup or shallow pouch constructed from yucca fibers and suspended from a yucca stalk or the spine of an agave rosette. The female weaves it while the male sings from a nearby perch - a rich, fluted song that carries through the desert silence and led early naturalists to compare it favorably with the Baltimore’s. Some authorities place it among the finest oriole songs on the continent.

The Scott’s Oriole breeds in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and north into the Great Basin. It arrives in April, raises a single brood, and departs by August. The window to see it singing against a blooming yucca - that yellow against white flowers against blue sky - is brief.
