Eastern Bluebird Print - Pair at Nest

The male faces the cavity. The female leans close behind him, wings slightly settled, watching. Two birds, one nest, and the whole negotiation of a breeding season reduced to this single composed moment. The Audubon-style palette does exactly what it should: the male’s cobalt back reads against the soft grey-brown of the female, and both birds read against the neutral ground, the arrangement quiet and complete.

Sialia sialis is a small thrush - 16 to 21 centimetres, 27 to 34 grams - that hunts from a low perch, dropping to the ground to take insects in open country. It needs fields with scattered trees, fence posts to sit on, and a cavity to nest in. For most of the twentieth century, all three grew scarcer together.

The female in this plate builds the nest, a loose cup of grass and weed stems inside whatever cavity the pair has claimed. She incubates three to seven pale blue eggs for 13 to 16 days. He guards the territory and brings food. The older nestlings from the first brood sometimes feed the young of the second, a behaviour documented across much of the range.

Pairs often stay together across seasons. Northern populations move south in autumn, following fruit and berries rather than fixed dates. Many mid-latitude birds remain year-round where wild dogwood and red cedar hold fruit through winter.
