Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.

The Orchard Oriole confuses people, and it should. Every other oriole in North America wears orange. This one does not. The adult male Icterus spurius carries a plumage that in low light reads almost maroon - a deep chestnut, warm and dark, set hard against a jet-black hood and back. In full sun it shifts: the breast catches fire and the burnt-orange reads like the last light of an autumn afternoon. There is nothing else quite like it.

He is also the smallest oriole in North America, a compact 6 to 7 inches where the Baltimore runs to 9. That smallness, combined with the dark plumage and a preference for mid-canopy perches, means he is routinely overlooked. The birders who find him tend to be the ones listening - his song is rich and varied, a rapid musical warble that carries well through deciduous woodland edges and old orchards.

He arrives in May and leaves early, often pushing southbound by late July while the summer still feels full. The window to see a singing adult male in peak chestnut is six weeks, maybe eight. This print holds that moment fixed.

On the wall, the Orchard Oriole reads quietly before it reads boldly. Dark birds on light grounds reward time. The longer you look, the more the chestnut differentiates itself from simple brown - the warm undertones emerge, the black of the hood deepens. It is the kind of print that earns a second glance every time you pass it.
