The Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is a woodpecker that has largely stopped pecking wood. It forages on lawns, shoulders low to the ground, probing for ants with a tongue that extends four centimetres beyond the bill tip. Cornell Lab estimates it consumes more ants than any other bird in North America. In flight, the white rump patch flashes against the brown back, and for a single second the underwings reveal the colour that defines this species: lemon-yellow in the Yellow-shafted form of the east, rose-salmon in the Red-shafted form of the west.
The drumming male in spring finds the loudest resonant surface in his territory - often a metal gutter - and announces himself at dawn. He is not damaging anything. He is performing.
The Audubon plate shows the bird on a fence post in the upright resting posture, the black bib and spotted breast at full depth, the bill slightly open. The brown and buff tones of the body make the black bib the primary graphic element. On the 24x30 size the plate reveals the fine barring on the back feathers that compresses into texture on smaller formats.
