The Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is the woodpecker that broke the mould, a soft-toned, ground-loving bird of lawns, orchards and open country rather than the deep timber. It is one of the most handsomely marked of all the woodpeckers: warm brown and buff plumage scattered with round black spots across the breast, a bold black crescent bib at the throat, and a bright flash of colour hidden in the wings, lemon-yellow in the Yellow-shafted form of the east, rose-salmon in the Red-shafted form of the west. A white rump patch shows in flight.
Because it is the woodpecker people so often see on the ground in their own yard, the Flicker carries an easy familiarity that makes it a warm, welcoming print.
