Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.

A crow-sized bird against weathered grey wood. Dryocopus pileatus grips a dead snag, the flame-red crest raised to a sharp triangle, the chisel bill braced against the bark. Charcoal black body, two white stripes tracing the neck, that one scarlet wedge at the crown. The Audubon-style palette does what it does best: sets a high-contrast bird against a quiet ground and lets the red do all the talking.

The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker found across most of North America, and the largest in a forest is never the quietest. Its call, a resonant series of kuk-kuk-kuk notes, carries half a mile through bare winter trees. The drumming runs at roughly 17 beats per second, accelerating and then decelerating through each burst, a pattern unusual enough to identify it by sound alone.

What this bird does to a dead tree goes beyond foraging. It excavates rectangular pits, sometimes cutting entirely through a standing snag to reach the carpenter ant colonies inside. The cavity it abandons next season does not stand empty. Wood Ducks, American Kestrels, and Northern Flying Squirrels move into spaces no other North American bird can create. Ecologists call this keystone behaviour. Every pile of fresh white chips at the base of a worked trunk is evidence of something the forest was quietly waiting for.

This plate holds that moment still. The bird at work, the snag giving way. A fine-art study in the tradition of Audubon, made for a wall and built to last.
