The pose is the argument for this plate. Dryobates pubescens hangs on the suet feeder, tail stiff against the cage wire, acting as a third leg, bill angled in and poised. Soft chalky whites and black barring, the cream of the underparts against a winter-light ground. One small scarlet patch at the nape, the only warmth in the palette. This is the Audubon-style portrait at its most domestic: the feeder bird rendered with the same care the old plate-makers gave to birds of the wilderness.

The Downy is the smallest woodpecker in North America, ranging between 14 and 18 centimetres and weighing as little as 20 grams. That smallness is the key fact about the species. It is the only North American woodpecker light enough to forage on goldenrod stems, prising out gall fly larvae from inside the stalk, a food source no Hairy or Pileated Woodpecker can reach.

The bill in this plate is worth studying. It is visibly shorter than the depth of the bird’s head, which is the fastest field mark separating it from the nearly identical Hairy Woodpecker. The distinction that confounds beginners is built into the composition.

In winter, Downies regularly join mixed-species flocks of chickadees and nuthatches, each species working a different part of the woodland: the chickadee takes leaf clusters, the nuthatch works bark downward, the Downy hammers dead wood. More eyes, fewer mistakes.
