The name comes from colour. Piranga flava hepatica - hepatica referring to the liver, the dark reddish-brown of that organ when fresh. The Hepatic Tanager is darker than the Summer Tanager, darker than the Scarlet Tanager’s red, a deep brick-red that suggests something older, more resinous, the colour of a worn terracotta tile in late afternoon light. The grey flanks and back provide contrast; the dark ear-patch is the field mark that separates it from every other North American tanager at distance.
It is a mountain bird. The Hepatic Tanager breeds in pine-oak forests above 5,000 feet in southeastern Arizona, southern New Mexico, and the Chisos Mountains of Texas, and it winters in Mexico and Central America. In the United States it is local and often difficult to find - the Madrean Sky Islands of Arizona are the best access point, and birders who visit the Chiricahua or Santa Catalina mountains in May make a point of searching the ponderosa pine stands for this bird.
The song is similar to the American Robin’s in phrasing - a series of rich, slurred phrases - but harsher, slightly rasping, delivered from a treetop perch. In pine forest the call is a soft chuck, single-noted, easy to overlook.
The Hepatic Tanager is among the least-expected red birds in North America. It appears on state lists for only three states. For birders who have made the mountain pilgrimage to find it, this print is a place-memory. For those who have not, it is something to look forward to.
