Where the Baltimore Oriole owns the east, Bullock’s Oriole owns the West. The male Icterus bullockii is a bird of cottonwoods and stream corridors, of open western woodlands and suburban neighbourhoods from the Rockies to the Pacific. He is every bit as brilliant as his eastern counterpart but built differently: more white in the wing, more orange on the face, and a black cap that leaves a bold orange cheek exposed.
The white wing patch is the field mark. A large, solid white rectangle on a closed wing - no oriole in the West has anything close to it. In flight, when the wing opens and the white flares against orange and black, it stops you mid-sentence. He is not a subtle bird.
The Bullock’s Oriole is a weaver. The female constructs a hanging pouch nest from plant fibers, hair, and string, suspended from the end of a branch over water or open ground. The male sings a fluty, whistled series of notes from high in the canopy and defends the territory vigorously. Both parents feed the young, and the male stays involved in ways that many songbirds do not.
On the wall this print carries the geography of the West - the open skies, the cottonwood greens, the particular brilliance of an oriole against a clear May morning. The orange reads as warm as afternoon light. The black grounds it. The white wing patch ties it all together.
