You hear the Eastern Towhee before you see it. A two-note call - tow-HEE - rising sharply, coming from low in the brush. Then the scratching: both feet together, throwing leaves backward in a raking double-kick. Pipilo erythrophthalmus is a sparrow built like a thrush, large and round and full of personality, and it does almost everything at ground level.
The male is dressed for contrast. A black hood pulls down over the entire head and upper breast, clean and absolute. White spots mark the folded wing. The belly is white. And then, unexpectedly, the flanks: a warm rufous-orange that runs from the chest to the tail sides like a banked ember. It is a tricolour as striking as any warbler, on a bird twice the size.
The red eye - erythrophthalmus is Latin for red-eyed - is visible at close range, bright against the black hood. In the Southeast, some populations have white eyes; in the Northeast and Midwest, the eye is red. Cornell’s All About Birds documents the geographic variation, but the impression in either case is the same: this is a bird that holds its ground and looks back at you.
The Eastern Towhee scratches through leaf litter along woodland edges and in shrubby thickets from eastern Canada to Florida. It is a year-round resident through much of its range, and a familiar voice at the edge of every eastern garden with a little wildness left in it.
Available in three sizes on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm - archival cotton, acid-free, matte finish. Printed by Prodigi using pigment inks rated 100+ years under display conditions.
