A scrap of summer sky, gone walking. The Indigo Bunting sits low on a seedhead, the field warm and gold around him. His blue is not one blue but many, deep at the wing, near violet at the crown, lit where the light catches. The palette is true to the Audubon tradition: hand-warmed creams and sages, the bird rendered in the saturated indigo that gave him his name.
A fine-art print made in the Audubon tradition, in the style of the great plates of Birds of America. The bird is the whole of it. No clutter, no caption crowding the frame. Just the Indigo Bunting and the field he sings from, printed to hold every shift of blue.
Unframed, the print comes on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm, an archival cotton rag with a soft, natural surface that suits this palette beautifully. Colours sit deep and matte, the way a real plate should.
Choose the framed option and the print is mounted and glazed in a classic moulding, on Enhanced Matte 200gsm. Pick from black, brown, dark grey or gold. The framed print is not on Hahnemühle stock, but it arrives ready to hang straight from the box.
Three sizes: A4, A3 and A2. Prints from $39. Framed from $109.
This is a blue bird on a warm ground, so it carries a room rather than fighting it. A gold moulding lifts the indigo and flatters the cream field. Against a pale or sage wall, the blue reads loud and clean. Hang it at eye level, somewhere the morning light can reach it, and the wing will do the rest.
The Indigo Bunting is a small finch-like songbird of eastern and central North America, common at woodland edges and in scrubby, open fields. The breeding male is the bird you picture: brilliant blue, though that blue is a trick of light on his feathers rather than true pigment. Females and winter males are a plain warm brown. He sings through the heat of the day when other birds fall quiet, and migrates by night, steering by the stars.
A small blue voice in a gold field. Worth a wall.
