Head pointed at the ground. One foot high, anchoring; one foot low, reaching. The White-breasted Nuthatch descends the bark face-first, and the plate catches that exact posture: the slate-blue back, the clean white face, the black cap, all set against the warm branch-brown of the Audubon-style ground. It is an instantly recognisable bird, in the one attitude it is always found in.
Sitta carolinensis is the only common woodland bird in North America that descends a tree trunk head-first. Every other bark-worker - the woodpecker, the Brown Creeper - goes upward. The nuthatch alone goes down, and the difference is the whole point. Descending, it sees into the crevices and furrows of the bark from above, the angle an upward-climbing bird can never get. The grub a woodpecker passed on the way up, the nuthatch finds on the way down.
The largest of the North American nuthatches, it weighs around 20 grams and measures 13 to 14 centimetres. The male’s cap is a glossy black. The female’s is grey, or a duller slate, often with only a hint of black at the front. Both carry a small chestnut wash under the tail. The nasal, repeated yank-yank-yank is the call that usually finds the bird for you, carrying through bare December woodland before you spot the bird itself.
Pairs hold their territory year-round. The two birds you see at the winter feeder are the same pair that nested in the wood in May. They tend to stay.
In the tradition of Audubon, a settled bird caught in its one defining act.
