Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.

A flash of red along the crown. Melanerpes carolinus braced against oak bark, mid-climb, head tilted to work the surface. The Audubon-style palette gives it a warm cream ground and the deep brown of a winter trunk, and then the back: fine, even black-and-white barring from nape to tail, the pattern birders call the zebra back. Against all that, the scarlet runs unbroken from bill to nape on the male. The belly blush, the faint rose wash that named this bird, is pressed against the bark and barely visible. The field mark that matters is always the head.

The Red-bellied Woodpecker carries a tongue that can extend nearly two inches past the tip of its bill, barbed and coated in sticky saliva, able to hook a grub from a crevice the bill alone cannot reach. It is an extraordinary piece of anatomy for a bird that most people know only by its rolling churr coming down through the canopy.

It hides food too. Acorns and beechnuts wedged into bark furrows, fence posts, and any tight crevice it finds. Then it returns to them through winter. A bird that forages and stores and extends its tongue into dead wood, but was named for a belly wash that almost no one sees in the field. That is the small injustice of its common name.

The oak in this plate holds the bird the way the old natural-history plates held their subjects, steady and close, so the barring and the red can be properly studied.

A fine-art study in the tradition of Audubon.
