Before a penguin is sleek it is a ball of down. This plate is the part of the life cycle the adult portraits leave out: the chicks, huddled together in the crèche, in the woolly grey-brown coat that no adult ever wears. In the big colonies the young gather in their thousands while both parents are at sea, packed shoulder to shoulder for warmth and for safety, a nursery run by the whole colony at once.
The down is the whole story. It is thick, soft and useless in water, which is why a chick cannot swim until it has moulted into the waterproof feathers of an adult. Until then it is grounded, fed by parents who recognise their own chick by call alone across a beach of identical, calling young. The dark face, the pale-ringed eye, the round unfinished body: every penguin begins here, whatever ice or shore it ends up ruling.
On the page it is the warmest, most disarming image in the collection, and it earns its place beside the adults rather than below them. Hung in a nursery or a child’s room it reads as exactly what it is, drawn with the same honest attention the rest of the collection gives a grown bird. No cuteness added. The chicks supply that themselves.
