A Great Horned Owl on a bare branch at dusk. Ear tufts raised. Eyes forward - that flat yellow stare fixed on whatever moved a moment ago. The barred breast pale against the low evening sky, the broad head set low on heavy shoulders. This is the bird at its most recognisable and most still.
Bubo virginianus ranges from the Arctic tree line to the forests of South America, and is as likely to be found hunting a suburban cemetery as a mountain canyon. She is the earliest breeder of any common North American bird - eggs laid in January or February while winter is still firm, so that owlets fledge in May, just as small-mammal populations peak. The timing is deliberate.
She does not build a nest. She takes one - the old stick platform of a Red-tailed Hawk, a crow, a heron - and claims it without ceremony. The hawk either rebuilds elsewhere or skips the season. The owl has been documented in that same territory for years. The Red-tailed Hawk, the daytime apex raptor of the same range, defers to her at night.
Those prominent tufts are not ears. The real ears are slots in the side of the head, set at different heights, so the brain can compute prey location in three dimensions from the delay between them. She can locate a vole under 60 centimetres of snowpack and drop on it in silence. The leading edge of each flight feather is serrated, breaking the rush of air into small eddies. She arrives without sound.
The hoot that carries 1.5 kilometres on still air in November is the most you are likely to ever hear of her.
A fine-art portrait in the tradition of Audubon - the night hunter, held in the last light.
