The cardinal is the state bird of seven US states, more than any other species. Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia: a contiguous block that maps, almost exactly, the cardinal’s heartland. The bird earned those seven not through rarity but through constancy. He does not migrate. He does not change colour with the seasons. He is the same bird on the same branch in January as in June, which is unusual in North American wildlife and is, for most people, the reason they trust him.
The berried branch in this plate is not only compositional. Cardinals are carotenoid colourists. The fruit and berries they eat in autumn are the raw material of the red they wear in March. A bird with access to dogwood, sumac, hackberry and wild grape in October grows visibly brighter plumage than a bird on sunflower seeds alone. The plate holds that outcome.
The composition follows Audubon’s plate logic: a single bird, a single branch, open ground around it, every feather held in the same careful focus. Drawn in the old naturalist manner and printed on archival paper to last.
