Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.

White against a dim wash of marsh light. The Great Egret lifts its wings, and the whole bird becomes a held breath.

This is the moment the old plate-makers loved. The neck drawn back, the long bill level, the breeding plumes trailing like spun glass. The palette stays close to the Audubon tradition: warm cream ground, soft sage and reed, a quiet navy for depth. The white of the bird carries the page.

The print

A fine-art print in the Audubon tradition, made as a collector’s plate rather than a poster. Rich tonal range, true colour, clean detail in the plumes and the long dark legs. Printed to last, on archival paper, with the calm composition the old natural-history folios were known for.

Paper and finish

Unframed prints are produced on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm, a heavyweight archival cotton rag with a gentle matte surface that suits the egret’s soft whites.

The framed option is a little different. It comes in a classic moulding, mounted and glazed, printed on Enhanced Matte 200gsm. Choose the frame in black, white or natural.

Sizes

8x10, 16x20 and 24x30 inches, with framed and unframed options where available, or an instant digital download. Prints from $39. Framed from $99.

How to hang it

This is a bright, airy piece, so give it room to breathe. A pale or off-white wall lets the egret’s white plumage glow.

For framing, a black frame adds a crisp modern edge, a white frame keeps the whole piece light and airy, and a natural wood frame leans more traditional.

Hang it where morning light falls, near a window or in a hallway, and the raised wings carry real movement.

About the bird

The Great Egret is a tall white heron of wetlands and shallow water across much of the world. It hunts with slow, patient steps, then strikes for fish, frogs and insects with that dagger bill. In the breeding season it grows long lacy plumes along its back, the aigrettes once hunted so heavily for the hat trade that the species helped spark the early bird-protection movement.

A still bird, caught at its most alive.
