Great Egret print

A Great Egret in breeding display, in the restrained palette of John James Audubon’s Birds of America: soft cream ground, the long white plumes lifted, the yellow bill and black legs in clean contrast.

Ardea alba was hunted nearly to nothing for those very plumes, and became the emblem of the movement that saved it. A bird of patience, drawn at its most extravagant.
