Great Blue Heron print

Still water. A long shadow of a bird. The Great Blue Heron stands at the edge, neck folded, eyes down, waiting.

This is patience drawn out to its full height. The palette is quiet and Audubon-true: slate blue-grey across the back, soft buff and chestnut at the shoulder, a black plume trailing from the crown, all set against a pale wash of marsh and morning. Nothing hurries here.

The print

A fine-art print in the Audubon tradition, made in the Audubon style and produced on archival paper. The plate gives the heron room to breathe, the way a real bird claims the shallows. It reads as a study and as a presence, equally at home in a hallway or above a reading chair.

Unframed, the print comes on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm, a heavyweight cotton rag with a fine matte tooth that holds the soft greys without glare.

How to hang it

The cool slate palette loves cool company. Set it against a pale grey, soft white or sage wall and the blues lift. A black or dark grey frame sharpens the bird’s outline. Gold warms the whole thing and suits a more traditional room. Hang it at eye level near a window, where daylight can find the greys.

About the bird

The Great Blue Heron is North America’s largest heron, standing over a metre tall with a wingspan close to two metres. It hunts by standing utterly still in shallow water, then striking with a sudden thrust of its dagger bill to take fish, frogs and the odd small mammal. It is found across much of the continent, year-round in milder regions, and nests in tall colonies called heronries.

Stillness is its whole strategy. The water gives it everything.
