Fine-art Golden Eagle plate in the Audubon style. The dark raptor of open mountain country, named for its golden nape.
Dark where the Bald Eagle is white. Aquila chrysaetos is a true eagle, not a sea eagle, built for open mountain country rather than water edges, and it wears no white hood at all. The name comes from the wash of pale gold over the back of the head and neck, lit like brass when the bird turns into the sun.
It hunts on the wing across moorland and high desert, taking hares, marmots and grouse with a stoop that can pass 240 kilometres an hour. The feathered legs run all the way to the toes, a cold-country adaptation the Bald Eagle lacks.
Revered across the northern world, it was the eagle of Rome’s legions and the sacred bird of many Native American nations, whose feathers carry ceremonial weight to this day.
Drawn in the Audubon tradition, where the weight of a bird’s history is carried by the accuracy of its line.
