The largest hawk in North America, and a bird of the open west. The ferruginous hawk takes its name from the rust-red of its back and legs, set against a pale, almost white breast that catches the prairie light. A fine-art study in the Audubon tradition, drawn to carry the broad wings and the rich rust tones of a true grassland raptor.

The ferruginous hawk hunts ground squirrels, prairie dogs and jackrabbits across the shortgrass prairie and sagebrush of the western interior. It nests on low buttes, lone trees and rock outcrops, and its fortunes rise and fall with the health of the open grassland it depends on.
