The Emperor is the largest penguin alive, over a metre tall and forty kilos at its winter weight, and it raises a chick in the hardest place any bird has ever chosen. The male holds the single egg on his feet through the Antarctic winter, under a fold of belly skin, in the dark, in winds that strip the temperature to sixty below. He does not eat for around a hundred and fifteen days. When the chick hatches he feeds it from a curd produced in his own throat until the female returns from the sea with food.
This plate is the moment that effort is for. Two adults, the gold-orange ear-patches glowing against black, and between them the grey ball of down that is the next emperor, still too young to leave its parents’ feet. The chick wears the soft slate-grey coat and the dark-and-white face mask of every emperor youngster, eyes ringed pale, leaning into the warmth of the adult beside it.
It is the tenderest image in the whole collection, and the least sentimental, because the bird earns it. Hung in a nursery or a hallway it reads as devotion drawn straight, no ribbons, no softening. A family that survived the coldest winter on earth, standing together on the cream ground.
