He pauses at the entrance. Head angled down, that blue back catching the light, the rust-orange breast pressed against the weathered wood of the box. Sialia sialis at the threshold he guards and keeps. This is not a generic bluebird portrait. It is a specific moment: the male holding his ground at the cavity, the same posture a birder sees from thirty feet across an open field in April.

The palette is warm and unforced. Deep royal blue above, terracotta at the throat and breast, soft grey-brown wood for contrast. The Audubon-style approach to colour lets the bird’s intensity do the work without oversaturating it.

There is history in this image. The Eastern Bluebird nearly disappeared from much of its range in the mid twentieth century, losing cavity sites as orchards gave way to intensive farmland and European Starlings claimed the holes that remained. The species recovered because volunteers built nest boxes and monitored them, season after season. A 38-millimetre entrance hole admits a bluebird and excludes a Starling. That single measurement drove the recovery across thousands of miles of range.

The male in this plate weighs roughly 30 grams and holds a territory of open ground, fence line and sparse trees, hunting insects by dropping from a low perch to the ground. He will raise two, sometimes three broods in a season, the older young from the first nest sometimes helping feed the second clutch.

A sentinel at the door, painted in a tradition that understood birds as the measure of a landscape’s health.
