Common Raven Print

Fine-art Common Raven plate in the Audubon style. The largest songbird, glossy black and famously clever.

Available soon

Bigger than you expect. Corvus corax is the largest songbird on earth, a metre across the wings, all glossy black with a Roman nose of a bill and a shaggy throat that catches the light blue-green.

The raven is not a crow grown large. It soars where a crow flaps, rolls and tumbles in courtship flight, and travels in pairs rather than flocks. The wedge-shaped tail is the field mark, that and the deep croak that carries across a canyon.

It is among the most intelligent animals ever tested. Ravens cache food and remember where, deceive rivals who are watching, use tools, and appear to grasp what another bird can and cannot see. In Norse myth Odin kept two, Huginn and Muninn, thought and memory, who flew the world each day and returned to whisper what they had seen.

Drawn in the Audubon tradition, where the weight of a bird’s history is carried by the accuracy of its line.
