The bird leans toward the berry. Crest swept back, black mask sharp across the eye, one wing slightly open. The moment before the take.

Bombycilla cedrorum is all finish and restraint: pale cinnamon chest warming to grey-brown on the back, a tail banded clean yellow as though dipped in paint, and those small waxy red droplets at the tips of the secondary feathers that give the species its name. This plate, in the warm cream palette of the old naturalist prints, does justice to all of it.

The Cedar Waxwing is one of the few North American songbirds that can live almost entirely on fruit. In winter, berries are the near-total diet. The flocks move nomadically, following fruiting trees rather than holding territory - a species that does not defend a patch has nothing to broadcast, which is why the call is a thin, high trill and nothing louder. Breeding begins in July, later than almost any other songbird of its size, timed not to insect hatches but to the peak of summer berries.

The red tips on the wing feathers appear to signal age and condition. Older birds carry more of them. A bird with full red wingtips is a bird that has survived, which is worth something in January.

A plate like this has been the correct way to look at a waxwing since Audubon first made the case for the close study of a bird in stillness.
