The crest is raised. That is the first thing to notice. Cyanocitta cristata on alert, front-facing, the cobalt and white barring of the wing laid out in full. This is the portrait plate. Cream ground, fine linework, the black necklace curving across the throat with the precision of the old hand-coloured naturalist prints.

The Blue Jay is not, in fact, blue. The colour is structural, produced by nanoscale air pockets in the feather barb that scatter light at the blue wavelengths. Hold a single feather behind a candle and it goes brown. The bird is a living physics demonstration. He is also one of the most consequential seed-dispersers in North American ecology: a single jay caches between three and five thousand acorns each autumn, carrying them up to five kilometres in an expandable throat pouch and burying them in forest clearings. He forgets enough of them each year to plant trees. The post-glacial northward spread of eastern oak forest happened at speeds that simple gravity cannot explain. The Blue Jay is the leading candidate in the literature.

He pairs for life. He helps incubate the eggs, which is unusual in songbirds. He mimics hawks - for reasons still debated - and his alarm call carries half a kilometre through still woodland.

The plate catches none of that complexity in motion. It catches one bird, one pose, one moment of stillness. In the tradition of Audubon, that is enough.
