Black-capped Chickadee Print - On Pine

A small bird, sure of itself. Poecile atricapillus grips a pine sprig, head tilted, bright eye fixed on something just outside the frame. The needles fan out in muted sage. The black cap and white cheek sit exactly as they do in the field - clean, declarative, the field marks you notice before anything else. Against the warm cream ground of the Audubon tradition, the buff flanks show their full warmth.

This is the chickadee as a naturalist would render it: close enough to count the white feather edging on the wing, still enough to hold the posture. The bird at a feeder is often a blur. Here it stops.

It weighs between nine and 14 grams. The bill is short and sharp, built for prying bark and cracking seeds rather than probing flowers. The chickadee uses it to open sunflower seeds, to split bark in search of insect larvae, and to carry cached food items to individual hiding places - each one stored separately and remembered for weeks. Cornell Lab notes the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for spatial memory, is roughly three times larger relative to total brain size in caching birds than in non-caching species of comparable size.

The chick-a-dee-dee-dee call that names the bird is also information. Research has confirmed that extra dee notes at the end signal a more dangerous predator - a small, agile hawk triggers a longer string than a large, slow-moving one. Other birds in the area decode the distinction.
