The Carolina Wren was chosen over the Mockingbird by an act of the South Carolina legislature in 1948 - a reversal nine years in the making. The state’s Lowcountry coast holds the largest breeding concentration of eastern Painted Buntings in North America, while 453 species on the official Carolina Bird Club checklist reflect a geography that runs from Blue Ridge mountain hollows to Atlantic barrier islands.
This plate gathers the signature birds of South Carolina onto a single sheet, drawn in the Audubon tradition of close observation and honest colour: Painted Bunting, Bachman’s Sparrow, Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Wood Stork, Swallow-tailed Kite, American Oystercatcher, and the Carolina Wren.
A studied composite in the Audubon style. Cream ground, the navy and sage of the house palette, each bird drawn in true proportion to the others and arranged as a single editorial plate rather than a chart. It reads as one picture of what South Carolina’s skies and yards actually hold.

A composite plate wants room to breathe. Give it a pale wall, warm white or sage, and hang it at eye height where the palette can carry. A brown or gold moulding suits the cream ground; black or dark grey gives a more graphic edge. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the colour over decades.
