The Carolina Wren was chosen over the Mockingbird by an act of the South Carolina legislature in 1948 - a reversal nine years in the making. The state’s Lowcountry coast holds the largest breeding concentration of eastern Painted Buntings in North America, while 453 species on the official Carolina Bird Club checklist reflect a geography that runs from Blue Ridge mountain hollows to Atlantic barrier islands.
This plate gathers South Carolina’s signature birds onto a single sheet, drawn in the Audubon style: Carolina Wren, Northern Cardinal, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, Mourning Dove, Ruby Throated Hummingbird, Great Blue Heron, and the Brown Pelican.
