The Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) announces itself with a rattling call that carries a quarter-mile along a creek before you see the bird. It hovers above water with heavy wingbeats - all proportion wrong for hovering, too large in the head and too short in the wing - then drops headfirst in a plunge that barely disturbs the surface.
The blue-grey crest, the rust-brown chest band on the female (making this one of the few North American species in which the female is more brightly patterned than the male), the dagger bill: this bird looks designed for exactly one task and performs it at speed. The kingfisher sits motionless on a low perch above water for minutes, then acts without apparent hesitation.
The Audubon plate shows the kingfisher perched on a branch, crest raised, head slightly turned toward the water below. This is the posture of a bird in the decision phase - still, watchful, about to move. The bill length and the crest profile identify the species at a glance.
