Two birds share a branch. The male presses close in jet black and burnt orange, one of the sharpest colour divisions in the eastern woods. Beside him the female is warmer, quieter, yellowish-brown above and soft orange-yellow below. Together they make the pairing Audubon himself rendered - the blaze and the counterpoint.

Icterus galbula arrives in late April or early May, one of the more reliable signs that winter is done. The male sings from high in the canopy, a series of rich, unhurried whistles that carry across the elm corridors and leafy suburbs he prefers. But it is the female who does the real structural work of the season. She weaves a pendant pouch nest from milkweed fibres and plant strips, threading each strand through itself and pulling it tight with her bill. The finished nest hangs three to four inches deep from a branch tip, swaying in a summer storm without dropping a single egg. It takes her up to two weeks to complete, and she builds it alone, without reference to any model but memory.

The male weighs between 22 and 42 grams - roughly the heft of a large walnut. The flame you notice from across the garden is carried on something very small.

This plate holds the pair as the old natural-history folios held them: close, still, lit from within, on a ground of warm cream that lets the orange speak without shouting. A study in the Audubon tradition, made for a wall where you will keep returning to it.
