Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.

The bird comes down to the orange half. Wings part-folded, beak already open, one foot gripping the cut edge of the fruit. Flame against a cream ground - the male’s jet black hood and burnt-orange breast rendered close, in the Audubon tradition, as a plate you can read from across the room.

This scene is earned behaviour, not posed. The Baltimore Oriole has an unusual foraging technique biologists call gaping: it stabs its closed bill into soft fruit, then opens the bill to part the tissue, and laps the exposed juice with a brush-tipped tongue. It targets dark, ripe fruit by preference, which is why the halved orange at a May feeder works so reliably. Icterus galbula arrives from Central America in late April and will find an orange within days.

The male weighs between 22 and 42 grams. His wingspread is 23 to 32 centimetres. He is smaller than he looks in memory, and brighter. The white wing bar cuts across the black wing like a brushstroke. The bill is long, slate-grey, and built for prying as much as grasping - the same instrument that threads milkweed fibres through a hanging nest knot is the one at work on the fruit here.

By August he will be moving south again, the orange a memory on the feeding post. This plate holds him at the moment before he goes - unhurried, head down, the light catching his colour at its peak. A study in the Audubon tradition, made to be looked at over a long time.
