A portrait pose, cream ground, the brick-orange breast set squarely against the slate-grey back. This is the robin without the lawn, the worm, the context. Just the bird, its colours read plainly: charcoal hood, white-streaked throat, that terracotta chest that reads from across a garden.

Turdus migratorius is the most numerous landbird in North America, with a population estimated at around 370 million - more than House Sparrows, House Finches, and European Starlings combined. It is not a bird in short supply. What it has, in abundance, is presence: the dawn chorus that starts 45 minutes before sunrise, the running pause on the lawn before the head-tilt, the blue eggs in the mud-plastered nest on the porch ledge.

That head-tilt is worth a second look. The folk explanation is that the robin listens for earthworms. The actual explanation is that it looks. The eyes sit laterally on the skull, so the bird must rotate to bring one eye directly over the patch of turf it is examining. Vision dominates. Robins with clear sight but blocked hearing take worms as readily as controls. The tilt is sight, not sound.

The robin male in this plate is in his breeding colours. A female’s breast is the same hue but chalky, paler. You can tell the difference from across the yard.

Made in the tradition of Audubon, where a common bird is given the same attentive line as a rare one.
