Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.

A flash of yellow on a roadside in high summer. The American Goldfinch lands on a nodding thistle, the one plant it loves above all others. Here he is caught mid-balance, lemon body and inky black cap set against the thistle’s purple crown and silvered down. The palette is pure Audubon: warm cream ground, soft botanical greens, that single declarative note of song-bright gold.

The print

A fine-art print in the Audubon tradition, drawn in the naturalist’s style of close observation and honest colour. Composed for the wall, with the bird and its thistle given room to breathe. Printed to order on archival paper so the gold holds true for decades.

Paper and finish

Unframed prints come on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm, a heavyweight cotton rag with a soft matte surface and true archival life. The framed option is a different stock: Enhanced Matte 200gsm, set in a classic moulding, mounted and glazed, ready to hang straight from the box. Choose your frame in black, brown, dark grey or gold.

Sizes

Three sizes: A4, A3 and A2. Prints from $39. Framed from $109.

How to hang it

The goldfinch carries its own colour, so let it lead. A pale wall, sage or warm white, lets the yellow ring out. For the framed version, a gold moulding picks up the bird’s plumage and suits a brighter room, while black or dark grey gives a quieter, more graphic edge. Hang it where the morning light falls. The thistle silver comes alive then.

About the bird

The American Goldfinch is a small seed-eating finch of fields, gardens and open country across North America. The breeding male turns brilliant lemon-yellow with a black cap and black-and-white wings, fading to a muted olive in winter. It is a late nester, timing its brood for midsummer when thistle and other composite seeds ripen. Both seed and downy thistle fluff go into its nest and its diet, which is why bird and plant belong together.

A small bird that turns a field gold.
