Here he is caught mid-balance, lemon body and inky black cap set against the thistle’s purple crown and silvered down. The palette is pure Audubon: warm cream ground, soft botanical greens, that single declarative note of song-bright gold.

The American Goldfinch is a small seed-eating finch of fields, gardens and open country across North America. The breeding male turns brilliant lemon-yellow with a black cap and black-and-white wings, fading to a muted olive in winter. It is a late nester, timing its brood for midsummer when thistle and other composite seeds ripen. Both seed and downy thistle fluff go into its nest and its diet, which is why bird and plant belong together.
