The White-headed Woodpecker is one of the most striking and distinctive woodpeckers in North America, and one of the least often seen. Its plumage is a bold, simple study in contrast: a body of solid glossy black set against a clean, snow-white head and throat, with a bright white wing patch that flashes when it moves and, on the male, a small red patch at the back of the crown. Nothing else looks like it. It is a bird of the western mountain pine forests, working the big cones of ponderosa and sugar pines for seeds, and for a birder a sighting is a genuine event.
