Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.

A Western Bluebird on a weathered snag, in the Audubon tradition. A gentle gift for a Pacific-coast garden lover, or a soft blue accent for a bedroom, sunroom or reading nook.

The Western Bluebird (Sialia mexicana) is the Pacific-slope counterpart to the Eastern Bluebird, equally dependent on nest boxes and equally colonial when nest sites are provided. The male is a deep cerulean blue - not the electric blue of a kingfisher, but a softer sky-blue that deepens on the head and wings. The chestnut-red extends across the breast and onto the upper back, a mark that separates this species from the Eastern Bluebird’s all-blue back.

The species forages by perching at mid-height on a snag or wire and dropping to the ground for insects - the same foraging style as the thrush family it belongs to. It eats berries through winter, particularly mistletoe where it occurs. It nests colonially when nest boxes allow, and populations that were declining through the mid-20th century (the same House Sparrow and Starling pressure that affected Eastern Bluebirds) have partially recovered through nest-box programmes.

The Audubon plate shows the male on a dead snag perch, the cerulean-blue head and back at full depth, the chestnut breast visible from the front angle. The back-extending chestnut is the field mark shown at the posture that makes it legible.

Paper and finish

Unframed prints come on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm, a heavyweight cotton rag with a soft matte surface and true archival life. The surface holds fine lines and subtle colour gradients without glare, which matters for Audubon-tradition work where the cream ground needs to read as paper, not as a white field. The framed option is set in a classic moulding, glazed and ready to hang, in black, white or natural.

Sizes

Three sizes: 8x10, 16x20 and 24x30 inches, or an instant digital download at $9. Prints from $39. Framed from $99.
