The Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) is the continent’s most efficient soaring bird. A vulture at altitude is rarely flapping. It is reading the air, riding thermals and the lift off warm ground, holding its height on a calorie budget most birds could not sustain for minutes.
In flight the silhouette is distinctive: a long-winged bird holding its wings in a shallow V (dihedral), tipping and rocking on the thermals rather than flapping. At rest the head is bare and red, the body dark brownish-black. Few birds are so instantly known by their outline alone, the slow, tilting circle against an open sky.
