The Ruddy Turnstone is the most patterned of the common shorebirds, a bold harlequin of chestnut, black and white with bright orange legs. That rich, tortoiseshell colour makes it a warmer, more decorative choice than most waders, a piece that brings a little pattern to a coastal hallway or a reading nook.
The Ruddy Turnstone earns its name by flipping stones, shells and seaweed with its short, slightly upturned bill to find the small creatures beneath. It works rocky and pebbly shores around much of the world, a hardy, restless bird of the tide line. In breeding plumage the chestnut-and-black back and the harlequin face pattern make it one of the most striking of all the smaller shorebirds to hang.
