The Red-cockaded Woodpecker is the rare, protected woodpecker of the southern longleaf pine forests, and few prints carry as much quiet conservation meaning. It is a small, trim black-and-white bird: a boldly barred back, large clean white cheek patches, and a fine black-and-white barred crown. The tiny scarlet mark behind the male’s eye that gives the bird its name, the cockade, is famously hard to see, which only adds to the sense of a bird known best by those who look for it. It lives in mature pine woodland, uniquely excavating its nest cavities in living trees, and it has been the focus of one of the great southern conservation efforts.
