Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm.
Wings folded, body drawn to a single clean line. Falco peregrinus in its stoop, the dive that makes it the fastest animal on Earth.
Recorded speeds exceed 320 kilometres per hour. At that velocity the bird breathes through baffled nostrils, a specialisation that has no parallel in other falcons, and rides a slight rolling S-curve in the descent to hold its line. The whole sequence, from the first tip into the dive to the level-out, is one of the most refined pieces of motion in the living world: pure speed, held under complete control.
The slate-blue back, the dark hood, the barred cream breast, the wide moustache stripe dropping from beneath the dark eye: in this plate, those field marks are held in the instant of commitment. The wings are not yet open again. The prey is below, not yet visible.
By the 1970s, DDT had eliminated the Peregrine as a breeding bird across the entire eastern United States. Captive breeding programmes and protected nest sites over roughly 30 years brought it back. In 1999 it was removed from the US Endangered Species List.
The stoop worked for millions of years before the pesticides and after them. This plate holds one moment of it.
In the tradition of Audubon, on archival paper, for the wall.
The peregrine is the focus-and-speed print. It suits an office, a study or a workspace, anywhere a reminder of precision earns its place. A dark moulding sharpens the slate-blue back against the cream.
A Father’s Day or retirement gift, or anyone who values discipline and control, the falconer, the pilot, the person who reads this bird as speed under command. It is the raptor for a particular admirer rather than the crowd-pleasing eagle.
Unframed prints come on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm, a heavyweight cotton rag with a soft matte surface and true archival life. The framed option is set in a classic moulding, glazed and ready to hang, in black, white or natural.
