Newell’s Shearwater is a seabird of the Hawaiian waters, known to Hawaiians as the Ao. It is crisply two-toned, blackish above and clean white below, with long slender wings held stiff and angled for the low, tilting glide that gives shearwaters their name, one wingtip almost cutting the surface as it shears along the troughs of the swell.
That sharp black-and-white contrast makes for a clean, graphic print. The plate holds the bird in its shearing posture, wings drawn long against the cream ground, all line and edge with no fuss, an elemental ocean study for a coastal wall.
It breeds nowhere else on earth but the Hawaiian islands, chiefly on the steep interior slopes of Kauai, coming ashore only in darkness to a burrow dug into the mountainside. That makes it one of the rarer seabirds you can hang, and a knowing gift for a birder, a natural-history collector, or anyone with a tie to Hawaii or the Pacific. It suits a coastal home, a study or a den.
