The longest bill on the North American shore belongs to the Long-billed Curlew, and it is the whole drawing: a slow, downward curve carried above the warm cinnamon of the wing. This is a bird of the western grasslands as much as the coast, and its print brings that wide, open country onto a wall. A single statement bird for a hallway or a study, calm in palette and unmistakable in shape.
The Long-billed Curlew is North America’s largest shorebird, breeding across the short-grass prairie and high plains and moving to the Pacific and Gulf coasts for winter. The great decurved bill probes deep into mud and soft ground for crabs and burrowing prey. Cinnamon-buff below and mottled warm brown above, it is a bird whose colour and line both read at a distance, which is what makes it hold a wall.
