The Hawaiian Petrel is a bird of the open Pacific and the high volcanic slopes. Hawaiians know it as the Ua’u, for the eerie call it gives over its burrows at night. It is a gadfly petrel, dark sooty grey above and clean white below, with a white forehead and a stout black bill, built for a life spent almost entirely on the wing over deep water.
This plate leans on that contrast. The dark upperparts and the white underside give a graphic, uncluttered study, the long narrow wings held in the bird’s easy ocean glide. Against the cream ground it reads as calm and elemental, the kind of seabird print that widens a room rather than crowds it.
It is one of Hawaii’s rarest native birds, nesting in burrows high on the slopes of Maui and Kauai and returning to the colony only in darkness.
