The Robin (Erithacus rubecula) is the national bird of Britain and the bird most likely to follow you across a garden in autumn, landing within two feet while you turn soil, waiting for the fork to expose a worm. Few small birds are this confident around humans. It is not tameness - the Robin is a territorial bird that has learned, over millennia of association with woodland-edge disturbance, that large digging animals are productive.
The red-orange breast is the field mark that needs no binoculars. The song is the one ornithologists measure when studying how birds adapt to urban noise: Robins sing in winter, sing at night under street lights, and sing from positions close to the ground where they can be heard through traffic. The Robin is also the bird on the Christmas card, the digging companion, the bird in the January garden that is not a garden without it.
The Audubon plate shows the bird in three-quarter profile, the breast colour at full saturation against the olive-brown back, the eye bright and direct. The cream ground gives the orange-red room to read without competition.
Unframed prints come on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm, a heavyweight cotton rag with a soft matte surface and true archival life. The surface holds fine lines and subtle colour gradients without glare, which matters for Audubon-tradition work where the cream ground needs to read as paper, not as a white field. The framed option is set in a classic moulding, glazed and ready to hang, in black, brown, dark grey or gold.
