The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) has the most recognisable field mark in North American waterfowl: a black head and neck with a white chinstrap that reads clearly at any distance. In V-formation migration, the honking wave over a suburban park in October or March is the sound and sight that stops people on a pavement.
The species was nearly gone from the eastern United States by the early 20th century, reduced by hunting and habitat loss. It recovered completely. Urban parks, golf courses, and corporate lawns proved ideal for a bird that needs short grass for grazing and open water for nesting safety. The Canada Goose adapted to the landscape that replaced its original habitat.
The plate shows the bird in the upright alert posture typical of a flock member on watch: neck extended, head turning slightly, the full chinstrap visible against the black neck. The brown back and flanks contrast with the white underparts. It is the alert posture, not a decorative one, rendered in a contemporary Audubon-inspired natural-history style with a soft paper-grain finish.
