The Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) male carries one of the most saturated breast colours in British birds - a rose-red that deepens in winter light, set against a white rump that flashes as the bird moves through hedgerow. The back is ash-grey. The cap is glossy black. The combination reads as almost over-designed.
The female wears the same pattern with the rose replaced by warm pinkish-brown: understated but equally precise. Bullfinches are quiet for finches, moving through bramble and wild rose in pairs through autumn and winter, rarely raising their voice above a soft descending whistle. They feed on buds and berries through the lean months, and a pair at a garden rose-bush in February is a mark of good hedgerow habitat nearby.
The Audubon plate shows the male on a fruiting branch, the breast at full depth of colour, the black cap defining the line of the head against the grey back. The cream ground holds the colours without competing.
Unframed prints come on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm, a heavyweight cotton rag with a soft matte surface and true archival life. The surface holds fine lines and subtle colour gradients without glare, which matters for Audubon-tradition work where the cream ground needs to read as paper, not as a white field. The framed option is set in a classic moulding, glazed and ready to hang, in black, white or natural.
