Before you see the Broad-tailed Hummingbird, you hear it: a metallic trilling sound from the male’s wings in flight, distinctive and unforgettable. The gorget is rose-red, a flash of magenta-pink that catches the light and disappears as the angle changes, structural colour rather than pigment, the same principle as a soap bubble’s rainbow.
A fine-art study in a contemporary Audubon-inspired natural-history style with a soft paper-grain finish, composed with clean negative space so the gorget carries the colour.

The Broad-tailed Hummingbird breeds in mountain meadows and pine-oak forests from the Rockies to Mexico, arriving in spring at lower elevations and moving to alpine meadows through early summer. Males hold territories around the richest flower patches and display with steep dive-displays that end in a sharp u-turn a few feet above the ground. It winters in Mexico, a bird weighing three grams moving across a continent twice a year.
