The Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) makes a British garden feel alive in January. It is small enough to fit in a closed hand, bold enough to displace a bird three times its size at the feeder, and coloured in a way that registers as implausible for something British. The blue cap, the yellow breast, the vivid green back: in grey winter light these colours appear tropical.
Blue Tits are agile in a way that most small birds are not. They cling upside down from branch tips to reach the insects other species cannot - the underside of a leaf is the Blue Tit’s particular territory. They hold the position without effort while heavier birds drop off. Their grip is categorical.
