Bold, graphic and impossible to mistake, the American Oystercatcher is one of the strongest shapes on the shore: a heavy black-and-white body, a bright yellow eye, and that long, flat, carrot-orange bill. It makes a confident print for a coastal or lake home, the kind of clean, high-contrast piece that anchors a hallway or reads well as one of a pair.
The American Oystercatcher works the tidal flats and shell beds of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, using its blade-like bill to pry open mussels, clams and oysters. Loud, striking and strongly territorial, it is a signature bird of healthy coastal shellfish beds. The dark hood and back against the white underparts give it a graphic, almost designed quality that carries beautifully onto a wall.
