The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is the smallest falcon in North America and the most distinctly patterned raptor in its size range. The male carries slate-blue wings against a rust-red back, two vertical black facial stripes, and a spotted breast that no other small hawk approaches. The female wears rust-red across the whole wing, different enough from the male that early ornithologists described them as separate species.
The kestrel hunts from a perch or from a sustained hover - head motionless, wings beating fast - before dropping on an insect or small rodent. It is one of the few raptors that can hold a true hover, and the silhouette of a hovering kestrel over a roadside verge is an unambiguous identification at any distance.
The plate gives the male his full colour: the blue-grey wing against the rust body, the two black facial stripes crisp against the pale face, the whole bird set clean on a warm cream ground.
A small, jewel-bright raptor that suits a smaller wall, a study, a home office, a kitchen corner or a garden room. It hangs beautifully as a single 8x10, or paired with another small raptor for a set.
A birder or a nature lover, the person who already knows this is the little falcon that hovers over the highway verge. The kestrel is the knowing gift, more personal than an eagle and a favourite of anyone who watches birds closely.
Unframed prints come on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm, a heavyweight cotton rag with a soft matte surface and true archival life. The surface holds fine lines and subtle colour gradients without glare, which matters for Audubon-tradition work where the cream ground needs to read as paper, not as a white field. The framed option is set in a classic moulding, glazed and ready to hang, in black, white or natural.
Three sizes: 8x10, 16x20 and 24x30 inches, or an instant digital download at $9. Prints from $39. Framed from $99.
