The Altamira Oriole is the largest oriole in North America, and it looks it. Icterus gularis is a bird of the Rio Grande valley, present year-round along a narrow strip of Texas that holds some of the most species-rich habitat in the continent - the brushlands of the Tamaulipan Thornscrub, where Mexico and the United States overlap and the avifauna of both intermingles. To find the Altamira, you go to the valley. There is nowhere else.

The adult is a large bird, 8 to 9 inches, carrying an orange that is richer and more saturated than most of its relatives - a deep, warm orange that reads almost amber in shade and ignites in direct sun. The black mask runs through the eye and meets the black of the back and wings; the white wing patch brightens the closed wing. The bill is notably long and slightly decurved.

The nest is the most extraordinary construction of any North American oriole: a hanging pouch up to two feet long, woven from plant fibers and suspended from the tip of a drooping branch, often over a road or clearing where the full length of the nest is visible. The female does most of the weaving; the process takes weeks. The nest often hangs in the same tree for years.

The Altamira Oriole has a limited range in the United States - the lower Rio Grande valley of Texas, no further. For birders visiting the valley, it is a species that requires a specific trip, a specific habitat. This print is for those who have made that trip, and for those who plan to.
