The Allen’s Hummingbird is a California original. Selasphorus sasin breeds along a narrow coastal strip from Oregon to southern California and is the earliest returning hummingbird in the west, arriving at California gardens in January while the chaparral is still winter-grey. By February, males are performing their pendulum display flights and the gorget is blazing in the slant winter light.
The colour is the warmest of any North American hummingbird. The gorget is deep orange-red, a fiery copper-red that in direct sun approaches the orange of a flame. The back and crown are brilliant green, the iridescence shifting from emerald to blue-green as the angle changes. The sides and rump are rufous-orange, that warm burnt-orange that carries through the tail. Taken together, the male Allen’s is the most warmly coloured of the Selasphorus hummingbirds - hotter, more orange than the Rufous, which favours a cooler, brighter orange.
A permanent resident population exists on Palos Verdes Peninsula and nearby Channel Islands, never migrating. The migratory population winters in Mexico. The migratory birds breeding in coastal California and Oregon arrive, raise two broods in rapid succession, and depart southward by July - one of the briefest breeding tenures of any North American hummingbird.
For California birders, the Allen’s Hummingbird is the one that announces spring in January. For everyone else, it is the coastal hummingbird you travel to see. This print is the shortcut.
