The Allen’s Hummingbird is a California original, the earliest returning hummingbird in the west, arriving at coastal gardens in January while the chaparral is still winter-grey. The colour is the warmest of any North American hummingbird: a deep orange-red gorget, brilliant green back and crown, and rufous-orange sides and rump carrying through the tail.
A fine-art study in a contemporary Audubon-inspired natural-history style with a soft paper-grain finish, composed with clean negative space so the gorget catches the eye first.

Selasphorus sasin breeds along a narrow coastal strip from Oregon to southern California. A permanent resident population exists on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and nearby Channel Islands, never migrating; the migratory population winters in Mexico, arriving in coastal California and Oregon to raise two broods in rapid succession before departing south by July, one of the briefest breeding tenures of any North American hummingbird. Taken together, the male Allen’s is the most warmly coloured of the Selasphorus hummingbirds, hotter and more orange than the Rufous.
